Recently, LG launched its Q6 smartphone with FullVision Display in India at Rs. 14,990. Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Tipped to Come With 3D Facial Recognition Feature

Xiaomi is expected to unveil its Mi Mix 2 smartphone later this year and alleged screenshots from the smartphone have now surfaced on the Internet. Interestingly, the leaked screenshots reportedly suggest that the next generation of the bezel-less display smartphone will come with a 3D facial recognition feature.

The alleged Mi Mix 2 screenshot, shared by a user on Chinese website Weibo, shows the head shaped outline that suggests that the company will be including a facial recognition feature on the smartphone. Notably, this outline is quite similar to the one present on Samsung phones that support facial recognition feature. Notably, the iPhone 8 is also expected to feature 3D facial recognition.

However, the user who posted this screenshot has mentioned that the Mi Mix 2 will come with 3D facial recognition, indicating that the feature might be slightly different than the one on Galaxy S8. The upcoming smartphone has been tipped to run MIUI 9 and is expected to launch next month, as pointed out in a report by GSMArena.

To recall, the GeekBench listing of Mi Mix 2 suggested that the smartphone will run Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The handset is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM. Earlier leaks have tipped the Mi Mix 2 to sport a bezel-less 6.4-inch QHD display with 1440×2540 pixel resolution. In terms of optics, the smartphone is expected to come with a 19-megapixel rear camera and a 13-megapixel camera at the front.

The Mi Mix 2 has been tipped to be launched in three RAM/ storage configurations – 4GB/ 128GB, 6GB/ 128GB, and 8GB/ 256GB. The handset is expected to house a 4500mAh battery.

Asus ZenFone 4 Variants Price Tipped, ZenFone 4 Pro Most Expensive of the Lot

Asus ZenFone 4 is set to be launched on August 17, and just like every year, it will be launched in many variants. While several leaks giving tidbits of many variants have popped up online, the prices of all of them now seem to have been leaked. According to the leak, the Asus ZenFone 4 Pro is going to be the most expensive of the lot, and the already unveiled Asus ZenFone 4 Max is the cheapest.

Taiwanese site Eprice has leaked the prices of all variants, and the Asus ZenFone Pro is priced at TWD 18,990 (roughly Rs. 40,100), Asus ZenFone 4 (S660) is priced at TWD 13,990 (roughly Rs. 29,500), Asus ZenFone 4 (S630) is priced at TWD 10,990 (roughly Rs. 23,100), Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie is priced at TWD 9,990 (roughly Rs. 21,000), and the Asus ZenFone 4 Max is priced at TWD 5,990 (roughly Rs. 12,600).

Furthermore, tipster Roland Quandt also leaked the US price of the Asus ZenFone 4 (S630) to be at $400 (roughly Rs. 25,500), and the price of the Asus ZenFone 4 Pro to be at $650 (roughly Rs. 41,400). The tipster claims that the ZenFone 4 (S630) will have 4GB of RAM and 64B of storage, while the Pro variant will have 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and be powered by the latest Snapdragon 835 SoC. He claims that the Pro variant will compete with the OnePlus 5 on launch.

Asus ZenFone 4 Variants Price Tipped, ZenFone 4 Pro Most Expensive of the LotThe ZenFone 4 family is tipped to be divided into at least five variants with the fifth variant being the Asus ZenFone 4V (V520KL/A006). The Asus ZenFone 4 original model may come in two RAM/ storage variants, and this price leak also suggests the sale. The Asus ZenFone 4 Pro model is a new variant in the mix, and it seems to be the most premium of them all. The Asus ZenFone 4V was previously thought to be a Verizon-exclusive variant.

As for the Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie, it is expected to run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, sport a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display, and be powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC with Adreno 506 GPU, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The selfie-focused smartphone will sport a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel front sensor – both with 4K support.

The Asus ZenFone 4 series smartphones were first slated to release in July, but that didn’t happen. Now, with the date confirmed for August 17, let’s see how many variants see the light of the day.

Essential Raises $300 Million From Amazon, Others; Will Announce Smartphone Release Date Next Week

Essential Products, the smartphone startup founded by a co-creator of the Android mobile operating system, has raised $300 million (roughly Rs. 1,921 crores) in new funding and signed up retailers to sell its first device, it said on Wednesday.

The $699 phone, with a titanium and ceramic case, will compete directly against new devices from Samsung and Apple this holiday season. Retailers include Best Buy, Amazon.com and carriers Sprint in the United States and Telus in Canada, Essential said in a statement.

The company, founded by Chief Executive Andy Rubin in late 2015, said Access Technology Ventures led the funding round, which brought its total investment raised to $330 million.

Strategic investors also included Tencent Holdings, electronics contract manufacturer Foxconn and Amazon.com, which participated via its Alexa Fund. Previous investors Redpoint Ventures and Playground Global also participated.

A release date for Essential’s phone will be announced next week, President Niccolo De Masi said in an interview.

The timing and distribution of the new phone could be critical during a year with many new releases. The Essential phone will only be displayed in Sprint and Best Buy retail stores in the United States, compared with the vast distribution network of the market leaders. In September, Samsung is expected to unveil its Galaxy Note 8, and Apple is expected to announce its highly anticipated 10th anniversary iPhone.

Some of the Essential phone’s features, like a detachable 360-degree camera, are also available on Samsung models, which are bulkier.

“It’s going to be extraordinarily challenging,” Bob O’Donnell of Technalysis Research said by phone. “The initial specs of the phone look good, but not necessarily unique.”

Essential Raises $300 Million From Amazon, Others; Will Announce Smartphone Release Date Next WeekAmazon, Best Buy and Essential will sell unlocked versions of the phone that can be used on any network. But carrier discounts could encourage buyers, R. “Ray” Wang of Constellation Research said in an interview. He said he expected Sprint to charge $300 with a two-year contract.

Sprint did not return a request for comment.

Wang also said the presence of two strategic investors from Asia signals Essential’s broader goals.

“It’s not just about US distribution. This is going to be a global phone,” Wang said. “The biggest phone markets are China, India and the US”

Essential will focus on “building a brand in the Western World” before expanding to other countries, De Masi said. It would consider sales of “low single-digit millions” of phones in its first year a success, he added, noting that production was limited by the unusual materials of titanium and ceramic. Most phones have aluminium or plastic casings.

“Over the next five to 10 years, we will have the same retail footprint and product diversity as Samsung and Apple,” he said.

LG V30 Camera Setup to Come With f/1.6 Aperture, Glass ‘Crystal Clear’ Lens

LG recently started sending invites for the August 31 launch event for its upcoming flagship V30smartphone and now the company has boasted about the handset’s prowess in the camera department. LG has announced that the V30 will feature an aperture of f/1.6 and will come with the ‘clearest’ lens ever on a smartphone.

The upcoming LG V30 will feature a dual camera setup and will come with largest aperture among the existing smartphone cameras in the market, as per the company. Notably, this larger aperture will allow the LG V30 camera setup to allow 25 percent more light than the f/1.8 aperture that is commonly found on many smartphone cameras.

LG says that the use of glass Crystal Clear Lens on the camera setup also helps the V30 in collecting more light than a plastic lens and provides better colour reproduction as well. “LG boasts [of] an unrivalled heritage in smartphone photography and our decision to adopt glass in the V30 camera is specifically because this has traditionally been the realm of DSLRs,” Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications, was quoted as saying in the company’s release. “For the users for whom the V series was designed, this kind of innovation is significant,” he said.

The company says that the camera setup on the LG V30 is superior to the camera of its predecessor, and that it cuts edge distortion by a third compared to the V20 when capturing wide-angle shots. Interestingly, LG says that despite the improvements, the rear camera setup on the LG V30 is 30 percent smaller in size compared to the LG V20.

LG V30 Camera Setup to Come With f/1.6 Aperture, Glass 'Crystal Clear' Lens“Paired with LG’s specialised UX featuring laser detection AF, optical image stabilisation and electronic image stabilisation, shutterbugs will find the V30 as easy and convenient to use as its predecessor,” the company said in its release.

To recall, LG recently confirmed that its next major smartphone, i.e. LG V30, will feature a 6-inch FullVision QHD+ P-OLED display. As we reported earlier, the LG V30 display will come with the 18:9 aspect ratio, just like the LG G6, and the company has said that it will cover 109 percent of the DCI-P3 colour space and support HDR10 as well.

The secondary display on the LG V30 is believed to have been ditched by the company and the smartphone has been tipped to pack a Snapdragon 835 SoC. The handset is expected to house a 3200mAh battery and measure at 151.4×75.2×7.4mm. It can be offered by the company in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage capacities.

Recently, the smartphone’s design was leaked through videos that were submitted as entries to the company’s own competition that was organised in collaboration with Joseph Gordon-Lewitt’s Hitrecord organisation.

Battery-Free Cellphone Technology Inches Closer to Mass Market

Researchers in the United States have unveiled a prototype of a battery-free mobile phone, using technology they hope will eventually come to be integrated into mass-market products.

The phone is the work of a group of researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle and works by harvesting tiny amounts of power from radio signals, known as radio frequency or ‘RF’ waves.

“Ambient RF waves are all around us so, as an example, your FM station broadcasts radio waves, your AM stations do that, your TV stations, your cellphone towers. They all are transmitting RF waves,” team member Vamsi Talla told Reuters.

The phone is a first prototype and its operation is basic – at first glance it looks little more than a circuit board with a few parts attached and the caller must wear headphones and press a button to switch between talking and listening.

Battery-Free Cellphone Technology Inches Closer to Mass MarketBut researchers say there are plans to develop further prototypes, featuring a low-power screen for texting and even a basic camera. They also plan a version of the battery-free phone that uses a tiny solar cell to provide power.

The researchers plan to release a product in eight to nine months time, though they would not give further details. One team member however, was prepared to give a glimpse of how their work will impact the future of cellphone technology.

“In the future every smartphone will come with a battery-free mode where you can at least make a voice call when your battery’s dead.”

The initiative is not the only one seeking to improve the way that mobile technology is powered. Researchers at the Universities of Bristol and Surrey in Britain, are developing supercapacitors, which they believe will eventually allow devices to charge in a period of a few minutes.

iPhone 8 Design Leaked in New Dummy Photos, Hands-On Video

The iPhone will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and Apple is doing everything to make it memorable for its fans. The iPhone 8 is expected to sport some significant changes, and a hoard of leaks corroborates that effort. Fresh reports bring more information on all the features that are going to be included in the iPhone 8 including enhanced HDR and MultiBiometrics support. Furthermore, photos of the iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus have emerged as well giving us a better idea about their designs.

First up, the HomePod code leak has been a gold mine for tipsters, and developer Guilherme Rambo has leaked fresh information about iPhone 8 features. In the code, he found that the iPhone 8 will automatically silence notifications if it finds that the user is staring at the screen, courtesy the facial unlocking sensor at the front. This is quite intelligent as you don’t need notifications to ring when you are using the device. The code suggests support for multi-biometric options. The code also pointstowards a camera capable of recording 240 frames per second on video at 1080p resolution -a significant increase in quality if true. To recall, the code had earlier tipped 4K video recording at 60fps, and both can certainly come to pass. The iPhone 7 is capable of 720p resolution only. There are also hints of enhanced HDR referred to as ModernHDR in the code.

iPhone 8 Design Leaked in New Dummy Photos, Hands-On VideoA new video, courtesy YouTuber Danny Winget, has been published comparing dummy units of the iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone 8. The iPhone 7s Plus is seen with the traditional horizontal camera setup, the rumoured glass back that enables wireless charging support, and the display remains unchanged from the predecessor, with the home button still intact. The iPhone 8 is much shorter and wider than the Plus variant, and it also features a glass back, with a vertical dual camera setup instead. However, the big difference is in the front with no home button, hardly any bezels, and a lot of sensors on top. The iPhone 8 is rumoured to ditch Touch ID altogether, and introduce Face ID as a form of exclusive authentication. The iPhone 7s Plus is going to prove to be a good alternative for those who do not want to let go of Touch ID.

Tipster Benjamin Geskin has shared dummy units of the iPhone 8 in Copper, Silver, and Black, and a cleaner render of the iPhone 8 in Copper Gold. He has also shared a hands-on video of the Black variant, and all of them corroborate the same design information as Winget’s leak. Tipster Sonny Dickson has also shared dummy unit images of the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone 8 sitting side by side, giving us a more comparative imagery of the three. The images were first published by 9to5Mac.
