Google for Education unveils two new Chromebooks with Wacom stylus

Google for Education has unveiled two Chromebooks, that come with stylus and ‘world-facing’ or rear camera. The Chromebooks have been launched in the US. Acer Chromebook Spin 11 has a 11.6-inch touchscreen (1366 × 768 pixels), while Asus Chromebook C213 comes with a 360 degree hinge. The devices are designed for students and come with affordable Wacom styluses. Just like real pencil, the styluses come attached with an eraser to correct digital mistakes.

These Chromebooks can be shared with multiple students as each student’s profile/access remains different from another. Acer Chromebook Spin 11 offers a battery life of up to 10 hours. The Asus Chromebook C213 has a 11.6-inches touchscreen (1366 x 768 pixels) and battery life of up to 12 hours. The laptops are listed as ‘Coming Soon’ on the site, with management and support for $30.

Moto C Plus Preview: Hands-On With The Latest Budget Smartphone
Google has already announced every Chromebook announced in 2017 will come with pre-installed access to the Android Play Store, no updated required.

“All Chromebooks launching in 2017 and after as well as the Chromebooks listed below will work with Android apps in the coming future,” said Google, in a post on the Chromium project site. The move will directly benefit students, making the platform more useful for them. At least 60 Chromebooks are already on the list.

The lack of applications has been the biggest headache for millions of Chromebook users for so many years. When Chromebooks were first launched, they were limited to run web apps and Chrome browser extensions. In the US, Chromebooks have emerged as important devices, especially in the classroom. While budget Chromebooks were launched in India in 2015, we’ve not seen more of these devices hit the market for all of 2016. We’ll have to wait and see if Google and its OEM partners bring more Chromebooks to India in 2017.

Flying cars under development vary significantly

Spurred by technology advances and demand for transportation alternatives in increasingly congested cities, entrepreneurs around the globe are vying to become the first to develop a commercially viable “flying car.” The designs vary greatly, and most aren’t actually cars capable of driving on roads. Here are some examples:

flying cars, Airbus, Vahana flying car, flying taxi, flying car prototype, drone, people carrying drones, driverless cars, driverless flying cars, Lilium Jet, aircraft, AeroMobil 3.0, Volocopter, two seater flying car, S2 al electric plane, Zee, Google, Uber, gadgets technology, technology news

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus is working at its Silicon Valley research center on a driverless flying taxi that at first will have a pilot, but will later be autonomous. The vertical takeoff-landing, all-electric aircraft is a cockpit mounted on a sled and flanked by propellers in front and back. Airbus plans to test a prototype before the end of 2017, and to have the first Vahanas ready for production by 2020.

Israeli tech firm Urban Aeronautics originally designed its people-carrying drone as an “air mule” for military use. It takes off vertically and has a standard helicopter engine, but no large main rotor. Its lift comes from two fans buried inside the fuselage. Two smaller ducted “fans” mounted in the rear provide forward movement. It can fly between buildings and below power lines, attain speeds up to 115 mph, stay aloft for an hour and carry up to 1,100 pounds.

Lilium Jet

German technology company Lilium Aviation is working on a two-seater aircraft that will take off vertically using 36 electric fan engines arrayed along its wings. The aircraft will hover and climb until the fans are turned backward slowly. After that, it flies forward like a plane using electric jet engines. The company has been flight-testing small scale models. The aircraft will have an estimated cruising speed of up to 190 mph and a range of 190 miles. The Slovakian company AeroMobil has developed a car with wings that unfold for flight. It uses regular gasoline and fits into standard parking spaces. It can also take off from airports or “any grass strip or paved surface just a few hundred meters long,” according to the company’s website. Driver and pilot licenses will be required.

EHang 184

Chinese drone maker EHang has been flight-testing a person-carrying drone in Nevada. The vehicle is a cockpit with four arms equipped with rotors. Takeoff and landing targets are pre-programmed. A command station in China will be able to monitor and control the aircraft anywhere in the world, company officials say.

Joby Aviation of Santa Cruz, California is developing a two-seat, all-electric plane with 12 tilt rotors arrayed along its wings and tail. The aircraft takes off and lands vertically and can achieve speeds up to 200 mph, according to the company’s website.

Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, began working a decade ago on a car folding wings that can fly or be driven on roads that’s called the Transition. The company says it plans to begin production of the Transition in 2019. Terrafugia is also working on a “flying car” called the TF-X — a car with folding arms and rotors for vertical takeoff and landing.

This two-seater, electric multicopter from German company e-volo has 18-rotors and looks like a cross between a helicopter and a drone. It is controlled from the ground, eliminating the need for a pilot license.

This Mountain View, California, aircraft developer bankrolled by Google co-founder Larry Page says on its webpage that it is working on a “revolutionary new form of transportation” at the “intersection of aerodynamics, advanced manufacturing and electric propulsion.” Company officials declined to provide details about Zee’s projects.

Fitbit may lay off up to 10% of its workforce: Report

Fitbit will lay off 5 to 10 per cent of its workforce as the company prepares to release a disappointing fourth quarter earnings later today. A report in The Information claims the job cuts are expected to affect between 80 and 160 people across multiple departments out of its strong 1,600 – work force. The purpose of the job cuts is to restructure the organisation and save around $200 million in costs, notes the report.

By restructuring, Fitbit will reportedly try to diversify its business portfolio. That’s probably the reason why the company showed interest in struggling Pebble and later acquired it for $40 million at the end of last year. The deal does not include any of Pebble’s hardware offerings, instead the purchase was an intent to get intellectual property such as the Pebble Watch’s operating system, watch apps and cloud services.

A source told The Information that Fitbit is interested in developing an App Store to better support third-party developers. This move would help the company to shift its focus from being the hardware-focused company. Meanwhile, reports also suggest Fitbit will cut down on making fitness-centric bands and will gradually start its focus on developing smartwatches.

This could explain what made the company to acquire Vector Watch, a European luxury smartwatch maker. Fitbit will be able to compete directly with Apple, Google and Samsung in the smartwatch segment thanks to these two acquisitions.

However, the smartwatch segment has been struggling and sales have dropped. Apple Watch, which is the market leader, has taken a big hit, and even Google’s Android Wear 2.0 was delayed for all of 2016. We’ll have to wait and see if the smartwatch market can mark some sort of revival in 2017.

Samsung files trademark for ‘Gear Fit Pro’; hints at a new wearable device

Samsung may be looking to launch a wearable device, dubbed the ‘Gear Fit Pro’. The news comes courtesy of a recent trademark filing with the European Agency For Intellectual Property.  The Samsung trademark application was first spotted by the Netherlands-based publication “Galaxy Club”, which noted a listing with Samsung as the applicant name. The trademark application was filed on January 23.

Unfortunately, the application specifies the device’s name, with no specifications, features or design details at all. However, there have been various speculations around the upcoming Samsung-made wearable device.

Samsung, Gear Fit Pro, Gear Fit Pro rumours, Gear Fit Pro trademark, Gear Fit2 successor, Gear Fit Pro MWC 2017, wearables, smartwatches, technology, technology news

SamMobile believes Samsung is purportedly developing the Gear Fit Pro that offers “advanced health and fitness tracking features”. Evidently, it will be based on the company’s digital health initiative which was announced in 2014 at the Samsung developers conference in San Francisco. Simband, a modular reference platform for wearable health sensors  was also showcased at the same conference. The wearable featured a number of sensors that measure data points like oxygen level, heart rate and body temperature.

There is another theory that says the ‘Gear Fit Pro’ could be the successor to the Gear Fit2, a hybrid between a smartwatch and fitness tracker. The device  is more than a fitness tracker, having a curved touchscreen and the ability to track and measure your daily fitness activity, beaming notifications etc.

Samsung’s application for a trademark is  the only indication that the ‘Gear Fit Pro’  is coming together and is soon to be released. While the South Korean giant has not yet commented on whether or not the speculations about the Gear Fit Pro were true, so we have to wait for the official announcement.

Apple starts rolling out first WatchOS 3.2 developer beta with Theater mode, SiriKit

Apple has announced the availability of the first beta build of the upcoming WatchOS 3.2 operating system for Apple Watch. The software update, WatchOS 3.2 (14V5205d) is available for registered developers so that they can build watchOS applications for the next major release of the Apple Watch operating system.

Apple, Apple Watch, WatchOS 3.2, WatchOS, WatchOS beta, theatermode, SiriKit, Apple Watch 2, WWDC 2017, smartwatch, technology, technology news

The beta reveals some pretty significant features for the upcoming update of the WatchOS. The most notable addition in the beta is the introduction of a new feature called “theater mode”. The new feature is meant to be used when you are at the movies. So when the user turns on the theater mode, all sounds are muted and all screen functions stopped. However, you’ll still get notifications via the built-in haptic feedback technology.

In addition, the beta comes with SiriKit  integration for developers who wish to build apps with Siri support. Apple introduced SiriKit for iPhone and iPad in September 2016, alongside the release of iOS 10.

SiriKit allows third party apps to work with Siri. This should be seen as an excellent move, allowing users to order cab or make any payment by giving a voice command to Siri, though it is up to developers to integrate Siri into their Apple Watch apps.

The first WatchOS 3.2 version comes nearly a week after Apple seeded the initial betas for  iOS 10.3, macOS 10.12.4 Sierra, and tvOS 10.2 operating systems. Unlike the other three betas, the beta of the WatchOS 3.2 is reserved for developers.
